Solving for the blank in any position
A missing number can sit in the first operand, the second operand or the answer, and each position needs a slightly different inverse. Mixing the positions on one page keeps students from memorizing one move and gets them thinking about how each operation undoes another.
Mistakes that come from the hidden position
- Applying the same inverse in every position, which gives 17 instead of 7 when the subtrahend is hidden.
- Reading the equation left to right and writing the number that is already visible.
- Forgetting that division is not commutative, so 36 ÷ □ and □ ÷ 4 need different steps.
One blank in each position
- Addition: 7 + □ = 15, so □ = 15 − 7 = 8.
- Subtraction with the first number hidden: □ − 6 = 9, so □ = 9 + 6 = 15.
- Subtraction with the second number hidden: 12 − □ = 5, so □ = 12 − 5 = 7, not 17.
- Division: 36 ÷ □ = 9, so □ = 36 ÷ 9 = 4, while □ ÷ 4 = 6 gives □ = 24.
Connecting blanks to fact families
Have each student write out the fact family for a solved problem: 7 + 8 = 15, 8 + 7 = 15, 15 − 7 = 8, 15 − 8 = 7. Checking the answer by substituting it back into the original equation is the habit that carries over to algebra later, so require it on every problem.

Why a box in the middle matters
Finding the unknown in an equation is CCSS 1.OA.D.8 and 3.OA.A.4, and it is the concrete root of the equation solving students meet in 6.EE and 7.EE. Hiding an operand forces the inverse operation instead of a left-to-right calculation.
Undo with the opposite operation: box + 7 = 12 means 12 minus 7, and 6 times box = 42 means 42 divided by 6.
box minus 7 = 12 gives box = 19, but 20 minus box = 12 gives box = 8. Students who always add or always subtract miss this.
