Which fraction skill to practice first
Fraction skills build on each other. Start by naming a fraction from a picture or a number line, then compare and order fractions, then find equivalent fractions, and only then add and subtract. Practicing in this order means each new skill uses an idea the student has already seen. Pick the skill that matches where a mistake first appears.
Worked examples
- Naming: 3 of 4 equal parts shaded is 3/4. The denominator counts all the equal parts.
- Comparing: 2/3 and 2/5 have the same numerator, so the fraction with the smaller denominator is larger. Thirds are bigger than fifths, so 2/3 > 2/5.
- Equivalent: 1/2 = 4/8, because multiplying the top and bottom by 4 keeps the value the same.
- Adding: 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8. With the same denominator, add the numerators and keep the denominator.
Common slips
- Adding the denominators as well. 3/8 + 2/8 is not 5/16.
- Thinking a larger denominator means a larger fraction. 1/8 is smaller than 1/4.
- Changing only the numerator or only the denominator when finding an equivalent fraction.

What the fraction controls actually change
Like vs. unlike denominators: addition and subtraction can stay at the introductory same-denominator level or force students to reason across different denominators.
Simplifying: prompts are deliberately generated with a common factor so there is something real to reduce.
Equivalent fractions: the denominator is scaled by an integer factor and the missing numerator must scale by the same factor.
Answer keys: computed answers are reduced to lowest terms so the teacher copy is not just a raw unreduced result.

Unit fractions and equal parts begin in 3.NF.A.1; number-line placement is 3.NF.A.2; equivalence and comparison are 3.NF.A.3 and 4.NF.A.
