Which percent skill to practice first
A percent is a ratio out of 100. Start with finding a percent of a number, then finding what percent one number is of another, then finding the whole from a part and a percent, and then percent change and real-life uses such as discounts, tax, and tips. Benchmark percents such as 10%, 25%, 50% and 75% are a good place to start.
Worked examples
- Percent of a number: 25% of 80 is 0.25 × 80 = 20.
- What percent: 18 is what percent of 24? 18 ÷ 24 = 0.75, so 75%.
- Finding the whole: 24 is 30% of what number? 24 ÷ 0.30 = 80.
- Percent change: 40 to 50 is a change of 10, and 10 ÷ 40 = 25%, a 25% increase.
Common slips
- Using 25 instead of 0.25 when converting a percent to a decimal.
- Dividing by the wrong number. Percent change uses the original value as the base.
- Multiplying instead of dividing when finding the whole.

How percent skills map to the standards
Percent enters the CCSS as a special kind of rate. 6.RP.A.3c introduces finding a percent of a quantity, finding the whole given a part and percent, and expressing a ratio as a percent. 7.RP.A.3 then bundles these into multistep problems — percent change, markup and markdown, tax, tip, commission, simple interest, and percent error. Keep early practice on benchmark rates (10, 25, 50, 75 percent) so students connect percents to the fractions they already know, then widen the rate set once the part-whole structure is secure. The recurring error this hub is built to surface is treating “15% of 60” as 15 × 60: the percent has to become 0.15 or 15/100 first.

Are percentage answers rounded?
Core number problems are constructed from exact relationships. Consumer-math problems are calculated in integer cents so the generated totals are exact to the cent.

Yes. Custom mode accepts whole-number percentages from 1% through 200% for the non-money skills.
Can I make percentages above 100%?
Yes. Extended mode includes selected rates above 100%, and custom mode can go up to 200%. Decrease problems stay below 100%.
Are the sales-tax rates current for a specific location?
No. Tax questions use generic practice rates for percent reasoning, not jurisdiction-specific tax guidance.
