How the ratio skills fit together
A ratio compares two quantities. The ratio skills here move from writing and simplifying a ratio, to making equivalent ratios in a table, to finding a unit rate, to solving a proportion, and finally to percent proportions. Each skill uses the idea that multiplying or dividing both quantities by the same number keeps the ratio the same.
Worked examples
- Simplify: 12 : 18 divides by 6 to 2 : 3.
- Equivalent ratios: 2 : 3, 4 : 6 and 6 : 9 are equal, because each pair is multiplied by the same number.
- Unit rate: $7.50 for 3 pounds is $2.50 per pound.
- Proportion: 3/4 = x/20 gives x = 15, since 4 × 5 = 20 and 3 × 5 = 15.
Common slips
- Adding the same number to both parts, which changes the ratio.
- Dividing in the wrong order when finding a unit rate.
- Mixing up which quantity goes first in the ratio.

How ratio skills map to the standards
The ratio progression starts in Grade 6. 6.RP.A.1 is ratio language; 6.RP.A.2 introduces unit rate; 6.RP.A.3 uses ratio tables, tape diagrams, double number lines, and equations to solve rate and percent problems. Grade 7 extends this: 7.RP.A.1 computes unit rates from ratios of fractions, and 7.RP.A.2 formalizes proportional relationships. Two errors show up every year and are seeded here on purpose — reducing a ratio by subtracting the same number from both terms instead of dividing, and building a ratio table by adding across columns instead of applying one constant multiplier.
