Free Rounding to 10 and 100 Worksheets PDF

Third graders use this 13-page set to estimate three-digit values at two scales: tens and hundreds. Mixed prompts ask students to choose the named place before rounding, with examples such as 335 to a ten and 203 to a hundred. Six practice sheets include a matching answer key.

What this printable is for

The 13-page US Letter PDF begins with a cover, then gives students six practice pages and a matching answer key. Practice pages 2, 3, and 7 each have 15 prompts, alternating between nearest ten and nearest hundred with values such as 990, 203, and 995. Remaining practice pages keep this mixed format. Name and Date lines appear on every practice page. Find answers on pages 8 to 13.

Choosing the nearest ten or hundred

Rounding replaces a number with a nearby ten or hundred to make it easier to estimate. First identify the requested place. On a number line, find the two neighboring multiples of that place value and see which is closer. For tens, compare the ones digit with 5; for hundreds, compare the last two digits with 50. A midpoint goes to the greater multiple, so the same number can round differently depending on the target place.

A useful way to think is to ask which landmark is nearer, rather than changing digits without considering their value. For 545 to the nearest ten, the neighboring tens are 540 and 550, and 545 sits halfway, so it rounds up to 550. But to the nearest hundred, 545 is 45 above 500 and 55 below 600, so 500 is closer. Always read the target in the question before choosing the landmarks.

Worked example 1

Round 545 to the nearest 10.

The neighboring tens are 540 and 550. Since 545 is exactly halfway, use the greater ten.

Answer: 550

Worked example 2

Round 545 to the nearest 100.

The neighboring hundreds are 500 and 600. The number is 45 above 500 and 55 below 600, so 500 is closer.

Answer: 500

Worked example 3

Round 122 to the nearest 100.

122 is between 100 and 200. It is 22 from 100 and 78 from 200, so 100 is nearer.

Answer: 100

Worked example 4

Round 930 to the nearest 100.

930 is between 900 and 1,000. It is 30 above 900 and 70 below 1,000, so the lower hundred is closer.

Answer: 900

A teaching routine for this pack

Mark both landmarks

For a three-digit number, sketch a short number line and label the surrounding tens or hundreds. Place the number between them, then compare the distances. Ask the child to name the target unit first so 545 can be considered against 540 and 550 or against 500 and 600.

Sort by target place

Write a few prompts on cards, including a mix of nearest ten and nearest hundred. Have the learner sort them by target before solving. This pause makes the requested unit visible and prevents a correct rounding idea from being applied to the wrong place value.

Explain the midpoint

Use 545 between 540 and 550 to show an exact tie. Mark the halfway point and state the classroom convention: a tie rounds to the higher multiple. Contrast it with 122 between 100 and 200, which is not a tie and is plainly nearer 100.

Estimate before writing

Ask for a quick verbal estimate before the written answer: should the result be a ten or a hundred, and should it be above or below the original number? Then solve a prompt such as 995 to the nearest hundred and check that 1,000 is a sensible nearby landmark.

Three ways to use it

A mixed-place warm-up

Use a few prompts from the pack to begin a lesson on place value. Learners identify the requested unit aloud, then solve, making the shift between tens and hundreds part of the thinking.

Check a midpoint idea

Choose a number halfway between two tens, such as 545. Ask a learner to mark it on a line and explain why the agreed rounding convention selects 550.

Independent review

After modeling both targets, assign one practice page. The matching answer key lets an adult compare responses and notice whether errors come from choosing the wrong unit or judging distance.

Common mistakes to avoid

Rounding 545 to 600 by using the ones digit to decide the nearest hundred.

For hundreds, compare 545 with 500 and 600. It is 45 above 500 and 55 below 600, so 500 is nearer. The ones digit alone does not decide rounding to a hundred.

Rounding 545 to 540 because it is exactly halfway between the neighboring tens.

545 is five away from both 540 and 550. With the usual classroom convention, a halfway value rounds to the higher ten, so 545 becomes 550.

Rounding 249 up to 300 because the ones digit is 9.

To round to the nearest hundred, compare 249 with 200 and 300. It is 49 above 200 and 51 below 300, so it is closer to 200. Consider the tens and ones together.

Rounding 990 to 1,000 to the nearest 10 because any number ending in 9 rounds up.

990 is already a multiple of ten, so it remains 990. It is zero away from 990 and ten away from 1,000; there is no need to move it up.

Common questions

How do you round to the nearest 10 or 100?

Find the two multiples of the requested unit that surround the number, then choose the closer one. For a tie, the common school convention sends the number to the higher multiple. The target matters: 545 rounds to 550 to the nearest ten, but to 500 to the nearest hundred.

How can I teach rounding to 10 and 100 with a number line?

Draw a line with the neighboring tens or hundreds labeled at its ends. Place the number between those landmarks and ask which endpoint is closer. For an exact midpoint, mark the tie and discuss the class convention. Changing the scale of the line helps children see why the target unit changes the answer.

What is an easy way to check rounding to 10 and 100?

Estimate the distance from the original number to each possible rounded value. For 122 to the nearest hundred, 100 is 22 away and 200 is 78 away, so 100 makes sense. Also check that the answer is a multiple of the requested unit and remains close to the starting number.

What is included in this rounding to 10 and 100 worksheet pack?

This file runs 13 pages: the cover, six mixed rounding worksheets, and six matching sheets of solutions. Each Practice pages 2, 3, and 7 has fifteen questions, switching between rounding to tens and hundreds. Name and Date lines are provided for the student. Consult the answer key on pages 8 through 13.

Is this rounding to 10 and 100 worksheet pack free?

Yes. There is no charge, and visitors can get the file without registering. The download is a PDF sized for US Letter paper; no A4 edition or PNG images come with it. Its answer key fills the final six pages, numbered 8 through 13.
