Designed for grades 1-2, the file runs 13 pages. Six student sheets come before the answer key at pages 8-13. The exercises numbered 2, 3 and 7 each have six clock faces to read, with a blank for each written time and a Name and Date line. The target is half-hour readings, including :00 and :30 positions; later practice sheets keep that clock-reading pattern.
What the half hour looks like on a clock
An hour has 60 minutes, so half an hour is 30 minutes. On an analog clock, the minute pointer points to 6 when 30 minutes have passed. The hour pointer has moved halfway from one hour number toward the next. Read the hour number it has passed, then say thirty minutes after that hour. The minute pointer at 12 marks the other half-hour point, :00.
For 6:30, the minute hand points to 6 and the hour hand sits between 6 and 7. The time is still in the six o'clock hour because the hour pointer has not reached 7. A useful comparison is 6:00: its minute pointer is at 12 and hour pointer at 6. The half-hour reading changes both hands, even though children often focus only on the minute pointer.

Read a clock showing 6:30.
The minute pointer at 6 marks 30 minutes. The hour pointer is between 6 and 7, so the hour that has passed is 6.

At the top of the hour, the minute pointer points to 12. The hour pointer points to 9, identifying the hour.

A teaching routine for this pack
Fold an hour in half
Draw a circle and mark 12 at the top and 6 at the bottom. Explain that the minute pointer travels halfway around in 30 minutes. Then add neighboring hour numbers and show how the hour pointer also moves halfway between them.
Contrast :00 and :30
Set a teaching clock to 6:00, then move the minute pointer to 6 and the hour pointer partway toward 7. Ask what changed and what stayed the same. This side-by-side view helps children connect :30 with both the minute hand and the hour hand's progress.
Name the passed hour
At 9:30, the hour pointer is between 9 and 10. Invite the learner to point to the number it has left behind. Use that hour name with thirty minutes; the next numeral is a destination, not the current hour.
Read hands separately
Ask first where the minute pointer points, then where the hour pointer lies. On a half-hour clock, a minute pointer at 6 signals thirty minutes; the hour pointer tells whether it is 6:30, 9:30, or another hour. This keeps the two clues distinct.

Common mistakes to avoid
A child reads 6:30 as 6:06 because the minute pointer points to the numeral 6.
At the halfway point, the minute pointer has traveled 30 minutes, not six. Teach the anchor that 6 on the clock face means :30 for the minute hand.
For 9:30, a child writes 10:30 because the hour pointer is between 9 and 10.
The hour pointer has passed 9 but has not reached 10. Name the hour it has passed, so the reading remains 9:30 until the hand reaches the next hour.
A child sees both hands near 12 and calls a clock with hands at 12 and 6 twelve o'clock.
Check which hand is which. At 12:30 the minute pointer points to 6, while the hour pointer is between 12 and 1. Twelve o'clock has both hands at 12.
At 12:30, a child writes 1:30 because the hour pointer is close to 1.
The hour changes only after the pointer reaches 1. At 12:30 it is halfway from 12 toward 1, so the hour remains 12 and the time is 12:30.

How do you tell time to the half hour?
Find the minute hand at 6, which marks thirty minutes. Then read the hour that the other hand has passed. If it lies between 4 and 5, the time is 4:30, or half past four. The earlier number names the hour.
How to teach a child to read half-hour times?
Show the minute pointer moving from 12 to 6 and describe that trip as half of the 60-minute circle. Move the hour pointer halfway toward the next hour too. Ask learners to identify the hour already passed before naming the thirty minutes.
