What this page helps with
In grade 1, children can use this US Letter clock reader, a 13-page file with six practice pages and a key at the end on pages 8-13. Pages 2, 3, and 7 each set six numbered dials for written answers; a Name and Date line sits with the task. All readings land at the hour. More practice sheets repeat the clock-face reading activity.
Reading an analog clock at the hour
A clock shows an exact hour when its long minute hand points straight up to 12. The short hour hand points to the numeral that names the hour. Children can read the short hand first, then verify that the minute hand is at 12. Together these positions mean zero minutes have passed in the current hour, so the written time ends in :00.
The answer key includes readings such as 11:00 and 2:00. In both cases, the minute hand points to 12; only the short hand changes. This makes exact-hour clocks a good place to teach each hand's job. A clock with the short hand at 2 and long hand at 12 reads 2:00. If the long hand moves away from 12, the time is no longer exactly on the hour.
Worked example 1
Read a clock showing 11:00.
The long hand at 12 shows zero minutes past the hour. The short hand points to 11, naming the hour.
Answer: 11:00
Worked example 2
Read a clock showing 2:00.
Check that the minute hand is at 12. Then read the short hand at 2; no minutes have passed beyond the hour.
Answer: 2:00
Worked example 3
Read a clock showing 8:00.
The minute hand points straight up to 12, and the short hand points to 8. Combine the hour with :00.
Answer: 8:00
How to teach it with this pack
Find the minute hand
Point out the longer hand and trace where it sits. At an exact hour it points to 12, the starting point for a new hour. Ask children to check this position before they say the time, so they do not mistake another hand position for :00.
Let the short hand name it
Once the long hand is at 12, ask which numeral the short hand points to. If it points to 5, the clock reads 5:00. Repeat with different hour numbers while keeping the minute hand fixed to highlight the stable pattern.
Use a two-clue sentence
Invite students to say, 'The minute hand is at 12, and the hour hand is at 7, so it is 7:00.' This sentence ties each hand to its role. The same reasoning works for 1:00, 9:00, or 11:00 without memorizing separate clock pictures.
Change one hand at a time
Set a clock to 2:00 and move only the short hand to 3 while the long hand stays at 12. Ask how the time changes. Keeping the minute hand still helps beginning readers notice that a new hour can be shown by the short hand alone.

Ideas for using this page
First clock-reading lesson
Introduce the two hands with an exact-hour example. Children can focus on the short hand's hour name while the long hand provides the :00 clue.
Oral time check
Show a clock face and ask for both clues before accepting an answer: where is the minute hand, and what hour does the short hand name?
Written practice session
Use the clock-reading pages once learners can identify the two hands. They write each displayed time, then compare it with the answer key to review their readings.
Mistakes to watch for
A child reads a clock with the short hand at 8 and minute hand at 12 as 12:00.
Name the hands by their lengths and jobs. The long minute hand at 12 gives :00; the short hand at 8 gives the hour, so the time is 8:00.
A child writes 7:12 when the long hand points to 12 at the top.
For an exact-hour clock, the long hand at 12 means zero minutes, not twelve minutes. Keep the hour from the short hand and write :00, such as 7:00.
A child sees the short hand at 3 and writes 3:30 even though the long hand points to 12.
Read the minute hand as well as the hour hand. The long hand at 12 means the minutes are :00. The short hand at 3 makes the full reading 3:00.
A child calls 10:00 ten minutes after 12 because the hour hand points to 10.
The short hand names the hour, while the long hand shows minutes. At 10:00 the long hand is at 12 and the short hand is at 10, so no ten-minute count is involved.
Quick answers
How do you read time to the hour on an analog clock?
Check that the long minute hand points to 12, then read the numeral the short hour hand points to. A short hand at 4 with the long hand at 12 shows 4:00. If the minute hand is elsewhere, it is not an exact-hour time.
How to teach telling time to the hour in grade 1?
First help children tell the long hand from the short hand. Keep the long hand at 12 and move the short hand to different numerals. Ask them to name the hour and explain that the top hand position means zero minutes have passed.
How can a first grader spot an exact hour on an analog clock?
Check for a long minute hand at 12, then use the shorter hour hand to name the numeral it points to. With the minute hand at the top and the hour hand on 8, the clock shows 8:00; both clues establish an exact hour. Children can name both hands as they explain the clock.
What is included in this telling time to the hour worksheet pack?
The file is 13 pages long. Six sheets ask learners to read clocks, then the key follows in the closing section, pages 8-13. Sheets numbered 2, 3, and 7 each contain six clocks to read and spaces for written times, with Name and Date lines.
Is this telling time to the hour worksheet pack free?
Yes, it is a free resource with no registration step. The only file format is a US Letter PDF, so there is no A4 or PNG option for this pack. The answer key is printed in the last section, pages 8-13.
