What this printable is for
Grade 2 learners use this 13-page US Letter PDF for quarter-hour clock reading. Six practice pages follow the cover; their answer key fills the final section, pages 8-13. Practice pages 2, 3 and 7 each have six numbered clock faces to read and a Name and Date line. Other practice sheets continue with the same type of written response.
Quarter-hour positions around the clock
Fifteen minutes make one fourth of an hour, one fourth of 60. On a clock, the longer hand points to 3 at :15, to 6 at :30, to 9 at :45, and to 12 at :00. The shorter hand moves along with the minutes. At :15 it is just past the hour numeral; at :45 it is close to the next hour but the current hour has not changed.
The answer key includes 8:15 and 9:45. At 8:15, the minute hand is at 3 and the shorter hand has moved a little beyond 8. At 9:45, the longer hand is at 9 while the shorter hand is nearing 10. Quarter past names the hour that has begun; quarter to describes the approaching hour, though the written time still uses the hour not yet reached.
Worked example 1
Read a clock showing 8:15.
The longer hand at 3 marks 15 minutes. The shorter hand has just passed 8, so the hour is 8.
Answer: 8:15, or quarter past 8
Worked example 2
Read a clock showing 9:45.
The longer hand at 9 marks 45 minutes. The shorter hand is close to 10 but has not reached it, so the hour remains 9.
Answer: 9:45, or quarter to 10
Worked example 3
Read a clock showing 4:00.
At the exact hour, the longer hand points to 12. The shorter hand points to 4, so no minutes have passed beyond 4.
Answer: 4:00
Teaching it step by step
Mark the four quarters
Divide the clock into four stops: 12, 3, 6, and 9. Name them zero, fifteen, thirty, and forty-five minutes. Have learners move a finger from one stop to the next to connect a quarter turn of the clock with a quarter hour.
Match words to direction
Teach quarter past as a shorter hand just beyond its hour, with the longer hand at 3. Teach quarter to as the longer hand at 9 and shorter hand nearing the next hour. Compare 8:15 and 8:45 so the language does not replace the written hour reading.
Watch the shorter hand
At 9:45 the shorter hand is almost at 10. Ask which hour it has passed, and keep 9 as the hour until it reaches 10. This prevents the common mistake of writing the hour being approached.
Build from a half turn
Start with the longer hand at 6 for :30, then move it back to 3 for :15 or forward to 9 for :45. Ask how many minutes separate each quarter stop. This movement makes quarter-hour order clear on the clock face.
Where it fits best
Ways to use it
Connect time words
Use quarter past and quarter to during a lesson about the longer hand's positions. Ask students to translate each phrase into a digital time and name the hour correctly.
Compare opposite quarters
Show :15 and :45 for one hour and discuss how the shorter hand changes. One is just after the hour; the other is almost at the next one.
Clock-face reading
Use the worksheet pages after children know the four quarter stops. Students write times from clock faces and can consult the answer key when finished.
Where learners go wrong
A child reads 8:15 as 8:03 because the longer hand points to the clock numeral 3.
The clock numerals mark five-minute groups for the longer hand. Three groups of five equal 15 minutes, so the time is 8:15, or quarter past 8.
For 9:45, a child writes 10:45 because the shorter hand is close to 10.
The shorter hand has not reached 10 yet. Keep 9 as the hour and read the 45 minutes from the longer hand at 9; the time is 9:45, quarter to 10.
A child says 4:15 when the longer hand points to 9 and shorter hand is near 5.
A longer hand at 9 means 45 minutes, not 15. The shorter hand is still in the 4 hour, so read 4:45, or quarter to 5.
A child calls the longer hand at 6 :06 because it points to numeral 6.
At 6, the minute count is six groups of five, or 30 minutes. The longer hand is halfway around the face, which is why this reading is :30.
Frequently asked questions
How do you read quarter-hour times on a clock?
Use the longer hand's quarter stops: 3 means :15, 6 means :30, and 9 means :45. Then read the hour the shorter hand has passed. For example, a shorter hand between 8 and 9 with the longer hand at 3 shows 8:15.
How to teach quarter past and quarter to?
Mark 12, 3, 6, and 9 as the four quarter-hour positions. When the longer hand reaches 3, the shorter hand has just passed the hour: quarter past. At 9, it is nearing the next hour: quarter to, while the written hour remains the one already passed.
How can you identify a quarter hour on an analog clock?
Quarter-hour readings use four anchor points on a clock face. At :15 the longer hand reaches 3, while at :45 it reaches 9. Check the shorter hand to tell which hour is underway; a position nearing 10 may still belong to 9:45.
What is included in this telling time to the quarter hour worksheet pack?
