How to Identify Informational Text Structure
Informational text structure describes the way an author organizes ideas so readers can follow relationships. Five common structures are description, sequence, cause and effect, compare and contrast, and problem and solution. These patterns are useful because they help readers anticipate what kind of information matters and how pieces of the text belong together.
The challenge is that clue-word worksheets can turn structure identification into a keyword game. IES guidance explicitly warns teachers not to rely only on clue words, and research-based structure instruction emphasizes recognizing relationships and using structure to support comprehension and gist generation. The routine below starts with ideas, uses signal words as secondary evidence, and ends by mapping the passage.
Know what each structure does
Description organizes information around features, characteristics, attributes, or parts of a topic. Sequence places steps, events, or stages in an order where position matters. Cause and effect explains how one condition, event, or action contributes to another. Compare and contrast organizes similarities and differences. Problem and solution presents a difficulty, need, or question along with one or more responses.
These are patterns, not rigid boxes. A paragraph describing a hurricane may include one cause sentence; that does not necessarily make the whole paragraph cause and effect. Ask what relationship organizes the most important information in the section.
Step 1: identify the main ideas before choosing the label
Read the paragraph or section and state what it is mostly explaining. Mark the important ideas that carry the passage's meaning. If you cannot yet explain what the passage says, a structure label is premature. The point of text structure is to make those ideas easier to organize, not to replace comprehension with classification.
For struggling readers, work with short passages that show one clear structure first. IES resources recommend familiar ideas and clear examples when introducing informational structure. Once the relationship is recognizable, move to longer and more complex text where structures may be mixed.
Step 2: ask a relationship question
Instead of scanning first for first, because, however, or problem, ask what the author is doing with the ideas. Are the ideas features of one subject? Are they stages that must be ordered? Does one event help explain another? Are two subjects being compared? Is there a problem followed by attempted or proposed solutions? The answer to that relationship question is stronger evidence than a single keyword.
Signal words can then confirm the pattern. Sequence may use next or later; comparison may use both or however; cause and effect may use because or therefore. But IES cautions that signal words may be missing, and the same word can appear inside a different structure. Treat them as supporting clues.
Step 3: map the passage according to the structure
Transfer the important ideas into a structure-appropriate map. For sequence, place the stages in order. For cause and effect, separate causes from results. For compare and contrast, keep both subjects visible and identify meaningful overlap or difference. If the information fits naturally, the structure choice is probably useful. If every box feels forced, reconsider the classification or analyze a smaller section.
This is where graphic organizers have real value. Reading Rockets and IES both describe graphic tools as ways to make text organization and relationships visible. The organizer should reduce complexity, helping the reader see how details support the passage's gist.
Step 4: use structure to write a gist or summary
After mapping, state the gist using the relationship. A cause-and-effect gist should preserve the cause/result link; a comparison gist should name the meaningful similarity or difference; a problem/solution gist should include both the problem and the response. The What Works Clearinghouse practice-guide summary for grades 4–9 specifically recommends teaching students to use text structures to generate gist statements.
Do not let the structure become a fill-in sentence frame that distorts the text. The goal is to keep the essential relationship while removing minor detail. If the passage uses two structures, the gist may need to acknowledge both or focus on the dominant structure for the question being answered.
Expect mixed structures in real informational text
A science article may describe a system, explain a sequence within it, and then discuss causes of a failure. A history section may narrate events in sequence before comparing two policies. Longer texts often change structure at headings or paragraph boundaries. Identifying those shifts can be more useful than assigning one label to an entire article.
When a passage feels mixed, bracket smaller units. Determine the structure of each paragraph or subsection, then ask which structure dominates the section's central explanation. This mirrors the way experienced readers process organization flexibly rather than searching for one permanent label.
Worked example: distinguish sequence from cause and effect
Suppose a passage explains that warm ocean water evaporates, water vapor rises and cools, droplets form clouds, and precipitation falls. If the passage focuses on the stages in the water cycle, sequence is likely the dominant structure. The events are presented as an ordered process. A sequence organizer would help preserve that order.
Now imagine another passage explains that unusually warm ocean water adds heat and moisture to the air, which can intensify a storm under certain conditions. That passage is emphasizing why an outcome may occur, not simply what comes next. Cause and effect is more useful. The two passages may contain some of the same vocabulary, so idea relationship—not topic or keyword—separates them.
Common text-structure mistakes and repairs
Mistake one is matching one signal word to one structure. Check the idea relationship. Mistake two is calling every chronological passage cause and effect because one event follows another. Ask whether the text actually explains why. Mistake three is forcing a long article into one structure. Analyze sections. Mistake four is identifying the structure but ignoring the content afterward.
Mistake five is choosing a graphic organizer that does not match the structure. A Venn diagram will not preserve a causal chain, and a sequence chart will not show which features two subjects share. Match the visual structure to the author's relationship so the organizer supports comprehension rather than adding another translation task.
Move from explicit instruction to flexible reading
Model one structure at a time with clear passages, think aloud about why the relationship fits, and then ask students to justify their choices. IES guidance supports collaborative practice and gradual independence. As skill grows, mix passages and remove the structure labels so learners have to identify the relationship themselves.
Eventually, the most important outcome is not naming 'compare and contrast.' It is noticing that a text is comparing two ideas and using that organization to remember, summarize, question, and explain the content. The printable can teach the routine, but strategic reading is the destination.
